Low blood pressure is medically known as hypotension. It is often less dangerous than high blood pressure, but it can cause dizziness, tiredness, ringing in the ears or circulation problems.
What is low blood pressure?
Low blood pressure means values are persistently below the usual range. Hypotension becomes a problem mainly when circulation is temporarily insufficient and symptoms occur.
Types of hypotension
Primary low blood pressure is often constitutional. Secondary low blood pressure occurs as a result of other causes such as dehydration, medication, hormonal disorders or cardiovascular disease. Orthostatic hypotension occurs especially when standing up.
Symptoms and possible causes
Dizziness, blacking out, tiredness, cold hands and feet, palpitations or a tendency to faint.
Too little fluid, standing for a long time, heat, medication, hormonal changes or little physical activity.
What can help with low blood pressure?
Regular exercise, standing up slowly, alternating warm and cold showers, drinking enough and eating several smaller meals can support circulation. New, severe or recurring symptoms should be checked medically.
