Regular and correct blood pressure measurement helps you understand your values and notice changes earlier. This guide explains how preparation, posture, cuff placement and measuring routine contribute to more reliable home readings.
Which device should you use?
Fully automatic blood pressure monitors are suitable for home use. Upper-arm monitors are the classic choice for regular table-based checks. Wrist monitors are compact and practical, but must be held consistently at heart level.
Preparation and correct position
Sit quietly for at least five minutes before measuring. Support your back and forearm, place both feet flat on the floor and do not cross your legs. Do not speak during the measurement.
Measure at the same time of day, on the same arm and under similar conditions whenever possible. A documented trend is more useful than single readings.
Which arm: right or left?
At the beginning, measure on both arms. If one arm repeatedly shows higher values, use that arm for future comparisons. Repeated clear differences should be discussed with a medical professional.
When and how often should you measure?
Many people measure in the morning and evening after a short rest. Wait a few minutes between two measurements and record time, readings, pulse and any special circumstances.
